Security Systems: Choose Appropriately

Before we compare and contrast different security systems, let's first go over the reasons you would need a security system in the first place. If you are looking to purchase a security system, you're probably trying to ensure one of the following. One, that intruders stay out; two, that you're alerted if you have a visitor; three, that classified and sensitive materials are protected; and four your investments are protected. Security systems protect us from mishaps; however, not every security system was designed for every situation. So, if you're having trouble deciding on a home or office security system, you've come to the right place. Let's take a look at some ways you can effectively choose the best system for your needs.

The first thing you need to do is decide if you want your security system to keep people our or keep sensitive material in, or both. The answer will determine where you should install your security system. To keep classified information safe inside your facility, make sure your security system monitors interior areas where you store sensitive material. If your goal is to keep people out of your home or facility, find a system that's designed to monitor the outside. The following are a few good examples of facilities that use security systems to monitor unauthorized visitors: schools, hospitals, and residence facilities. Some facilities that require heavier security on the inside than on the outside are banks, engineering facilities, and even prisons.

The next thing you need to ask yourself is, "Will I be monitoring my security system?" Some security systems provide 24 hour security surveillance while others don't have a monitoring system at all. When it comes to large facilities and businesses, having an audio and video monitoring system may be crucial. When it comes to monitoring systems you have one of two options. The first option is to have staff personnel monitor live video streaming. Having personnel monitor your system is great because you'll have someone ready to respond if there is a security breach. If you don't have a large enough staff to man the security monitors, you can still have the audio and video surveillance rolling 24 hours a day. Opt to have footage actively recording, so you can review the information when necessary. Keep in mind that if you are monitoring highly sensitive materials and normally experience heavy traffic, it may be wise to have someone monitoring your security system.

Unlike the previous, some security systems sit quietly. They don't record data or watch your access points, they simply fade into the background until something happens. These security systems are the typical in-home systems that feature a simple alarm upon forced entry. These systems are great for homeowners and small business owners, as well. Most systems will even dial 911 when there is a breach of security.

Knowing what type of security system you need for your facility is an ideal step before purchase. There is no need to spend extra money on a highly technical system with all the bells and whistles if you are never going to use it.
